The Great Gatsby.  The eyes of T. J. Eckleburg have nothing on the Misfits.  In this Special Great Gatsby Episode, we stare long and hard at three of Hollywood’s attempts to bring F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic to the screen.  Like the bespectacled eyes of Doctor Eckleburg, our gaze is often disapproving and occasionally downright judgmental.  The part of Jay Gatsby has been played by Alan Ladd (1949), Robert Redford (1974), and Leonardo DiCaprio (2013).  But when all is said and done, the question the Misfits must answer is, “Are any of these Gatsbys all that great?”

Olympus Has Fallen.  Here’s a film in desperate need of screenwriting “Life Alert.”  Perhaps a better title would have been Olympus Has Fallen and It Can’t Get Up.

Mud. You can’t always judge a film by its poster–or its title.  Despite an ad campaign that seems designed to drive audiences away,  Mud is probably one of the better films of the year.

42.  This is  the true story of Jackie Robinson, number 42, but unfortunately it “trickles through the thickets” and is “booted” by the filmmakers, who end up doing a “Barnum & Baily” on what should have been a great film.

Admissions. Paul Rudd continues his relentless campaign to appear in every lame comedy released in theaters.  With Prince Avalanche, Almost Christmas, and This is the End still to be released this year, the question has to be asked:  Has some evil genius who hates comedies cloned this guy?

Gangster Squad. A bunch of flatties ditch their buzzers and take on Mickey Cohen and his trouble boys.  There’s plenty of Chicago lightning and chin music, but it’s just a trip for doughnuts.

Blancanieves. It has bullfighting dwarfs.  What else do you need to know?

People Like Us. “People Like Us” is the reason movies like this are so frustrating for an audience like the Misfits.

Magic Mike. Cheaper than a “hen party,” safer than a bunch of “rope tricks,” and definitely less degrading than a “pervy hole,” the Misfits offer their review of Magic Mike, the story of a misunderstood male stripper.  But if watching the “bump and grind” isn’t enough and you decide to take it all the way, remember to be sure and “cloak the captain.”

Chasing Mavericks. Some movies are more than the sum of their parts; This film is more than the sum of its too many parts.  Despite too many characters, too many coincidences, and too many plot lines, it still manages to be a pretty decent film about surfing.

Jack the Giant Slayer. An even better title would have been — not Jack and the Beanstalk -- but The Beanstalk and Jack. Or even better yet: Beanstalk!

Robot and Frank. It’s a film about memory and the loss of memory that’s unforgettable.

Oz the Great and Powerful. Be sure and bring your ruby slippers, because half way through this film, you’ll be clicking them together and saying, “There’s no place like home.  There’s no place like…”

Bullet to the Head. Audiences might turn out to see one more Rambo or Rocky movie, but will they queue up at the theater for James Bonomo, the character Sylvester Stallone plays in Bullet to the Head?

A Good Day to Die Hard. As far as Bruce Willis is concerned, a more honest title might be A Good Day to Collect a Check and Run.

The Last Stand. Even though this film has some good things in it, it’s unlikely “I’m the Sheriff” will replace “I”ll be back” as Schwarzenegger’s most famous catchphrase.

Parker. This film has a bunch of taglines like:  “Payback has a new name” and “Parker’s a pro.”  But maybe they should just go with the tagline you can use for any Statham film:  He’s bald and wears a suit.

Spoiler alert:  Daniel Day-Lewis wins the Oscar for Best Actor.  Almost as shocking–the Misfits actually enjoy the Oscar telecast.  This show has something for every Misfit: crude humor for Da Man, singing and dancing for Nancy, Bond for Lou, and sock puppets for Jim.

Anna Karenina. All the world’s a stage, at least it is in this adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s famous novel.

Zero Dark Thirty.  The title refers to a military term for 30 minutes after midnight.  Why is this important?  If you go to an eight o’clock show, the movie is so long you might not get out until Zero Dark Thirty.

Beasts of the Southern Wild.  Hushpuppy might be only six years old, but she can still take on melting ice caps, floods, and prehistoric animals.  Even more amazing–she can find hope in the most hopeless situation.

Les Misirables. What do the Misfits think of this musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s story of pilfered baked goods?  Well let’s just put it this way:  It’s not exactly the greatest thing since sliced bread.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The only thing unexpected about this journey is that it’s two films longer than it needs to be.

Jack Reacher. Spoiler alert.  He never changes, is always right, never gets hurt, and always wins.  How’s that for a character arc?

Hitchcock.  Hitchcock the director:  “Drama is life with the dull bits cut out.”  Hitchcock the movie:  Drama is life with most of the dull bits left in–along with some even duller bits that never happened.

Django Unchained.  The best shot Quentin Tarantino’s film has at an Oscar is Christoph Waltz in the Best Supporting Actor category.  But if the Academy gave out an Oscar for the Most Entertaining Film of the year, Django Unchained would definitely walk away with it.

Hyde Park on Hudson. One thing’s for sure, “Happy days” are definitely not “here again.”

Killing Them softly.  Instead of saying “he sleeps with the fishes,” it might be better to say, “he sleeps with the audience,” which is how you’d describe someone who’s been bored to death.  Killings don’t get any softer.

Silver Linings Playbook. You’d have to be crazy to pick this film about a couple of antisocial, neurotic oddballs to be nominated for best picture, actor, and director.  Maybe that explains how Da Man did it.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Here’s a film that features a great cast in a charming story that was a surprise hit at the box office.  But are the Misfits ready to check-in or are they going to pack their bags and move on?

Oscar Nominations.  You heard it here first–the Misfits predict Daniel Day-Lewis will walk away with the best actor Oscar.  Not only that, but we’re also pretty sure the sun will come up in the morning.

Cloud Atlas. Take six of Tom Hanks’ worst films, place them in different time periods, watch them all at the same time, and that’s sort of what Cloud Atlas is like.

Lincoln. It’s Steven Spielberg’s big screen version of “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.”  Lucky for Spielberg, he’s got Daniel Day-Lewis instead of an animatronic robot.

Life of Pi. To paraphrase Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, “Zebras, hyenas, and tigers, oh my!”   But in this film, there’s also an orangutan, some meerkats, and a cannibalistic island.  Oh dear.

Flight. “Get ready to have your world turned upside down.”  Skymall magazine.

The Sessions. The R rating is a warning that the film is for adults, but a more appropriate warning would let you know that it actually treats you like an adult–an experience you might not be prepared for.

The Iron Petticoat. Cold War hijinks, bad Russian accents, and recycled one-liners.  Oh, and one more thing:  Dashing leading man Bob Hope (leading man?) plays a jet fighter pilot (no, really) and Katharine Hepburn plays a defecting communist Mig pilot (seriously, I’m not making this up).  For forty years, The Iron Petticoat existed mainly as a rumor, and during that time,  it was impossible not to wonder what in the world this film would be like if it actually existed.  Now, thanks to TCM, we no longer have to wonder–at least about whether it exists or not.  How it ever got made–that’s another question.

Headhunters. There aren’t any little heads in this film, but there is a slightly diminutive hero pursued by a large and formidable hunter.

Atlas Shrugged Part 2: The Strike. “The Strike” must refer to what the writer did when it came time to work on the screenplay.

Argo. How could this film go wrong? It’s got Alan Arkin and John Goodman.  Then again, there is Ben Affleck, but he more than makes up for any deficiencies in front of the camera with some pretty good directing behind it.

We Have a Pope. Considering how ineptly the filmmakers handle this story, it’s difficult not to sum up the film with one sentence:  Forgive them, for they know not what they do.

Skyfall. Sam Mende’s take on James Bond shakes up the established formula a bit but won’t stir up enough detractors to be a problem at the box office.

Arbitrage. It’s not really a thriller, and it’s not really a suspense movie.  It’s actually more like a  big-budget, driver’s ed safety film.

Perks of Being a Wallflower. It’s not exactly a John Hughes film for the 21st Century, but it’ll do for now.

Bernie. Spoiler alert!  Everyone likes Bernie.  No, really.  Everyone.

Trouble with the Curve. A possible alternate title:  Trouble with the Cliches.

The Master.  Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film isn’t really about L. Ron Hubbard or Scientology, and maybe that’s the problem.  This movie could definitely benefit from an appearance by Zenu.

The Campaign.  Da Man pulls the lever for The Campaign, but the rest of the Misfits go “negative” on this political comedy.

Looper. To be honest, the Misfits are more than a little confused by the whole time travel thing.  Where’s Mr. Peabody when you need him?

The Possession. A better title might be: Demon in a Box.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green. Besides a complete rewrite, maybe what this film needs is a little Miracle Grow.

Get The Gringo. Forget about Edge of Darkness and The Beaver.  Get the Gringo is Mel Gibson’s comeback film.  The only problem is, nobody knows, because nobody saw it.

Caught like deers in the headlights, the Misfits can only stare in disbelief at these films and ask, “Did someone really think a car from hell or a bulldozer animated by an alien life form would be scary?”  There are probably more laughs than screams in this Halloween offering, but whether it’s a trick or a treat is up to the listener to decide.

The Bourne Legacy.  While Bourne to Run could serve as an alternate title, Bourne to Be Bad would be a better description of the film.

Premium Rush. One gear, no brakes–just straight ahead, no-nonsense action at top speed.

Expendables 2.  In a movie where almost every line of dialogue is a catch-phrase or a callback to an earlier film, it’s hard to believe no one says:  “Yo.  Yippie-ki-yay, MotherF**ker.  I’m back.”

Oscar Predictions.  Yup, it’s that time of year again–at least it is for the Misfits.

Moonrise Kingdom. One thing’s for sure, there’s only one Wes Anderson.  And maybe that’s a good thing.

To Rome with Love.  Maybe Woody Allen should send a little of that love toward the audience.

Brave.  Does Pixar’s latest effort hit the bull’s eye, or is it a little wide of the mark?

The Amazing Spider-Man. Despite a tweak here and there, it’s the same old origin story again–except this time Peter Parker is in high school.  If the same unbridled imagination is applied to future films, we might get to see the amazing adventures of Spider-Baby or even Spider-Geriatric.

Richard Kline interview.  Part 2 of Jim’s interview with cinematographer Richard Kline.  Just a few of the films Mr. Kline has worked on are Camelot, The Boston Strangler, The Andromeda Strain, Body Heat, King Kong, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Snow White and the Huntsman. It’s got a talking mirror, a poisoned apple and even a new feminist slant.  It might also be the grimmest version vet of the Grimm fairy tale.

Abrahan Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.  Maybe what movie-goers need is an Emancipation Proclamation to set them free from terrible movies like this.

The Dark Knight Rises. Two out of three Misfits love it.  What else do you need to know?

Men in Black 3. There are fewer aliens this time around, but thanks to Josh Brolin, there’s twice as much Tommy Lee Jones — and that’s more than a fair trade-off.

Richard Kline.  A recipient of the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award and cinematographer on such films as Camelot, The Boston Strangler, Body Heat, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Mr. Kline shares memories of his early days in the industry as a camera assistant and camera operator.

For Greater Glory. It’s the most expensive film ever made in Mexico.  It’s got sweep, it’s got grandeur, but unfortunately, what it hasn’t got is a very good screenplay.

Rock of Ages. Rock ‘n’ Roll will never die!  But if this movie is any indication, it might be on life support.

Prometheus. Is this an example of style over substance, or, in this case, is the substance actually Ridley Scott’s style?

Battleship. “Hey!  You sunk my spaceship!”  Huh?

Think Like a Man.  It’s a film that isn’t a remake or a sequel, and doesn’t have any aliens or superheroes in it.  Instead, the surprise hit of the summer depends on a likable cast, clever writing, and good directing.

Dark Shadows.  Tim Burton is said to be a fan of the original soap opera, but after watching his remake, it’s hard to imagine the film he would have made if he didn’t like the series.

Avengers.  Some assembly required;  Luckily, Josh Whedon is the one doing the assembling.

Kazan, Kramer, and Preminger.  In their movies they took on crooked unions, racism, the end of the world, drug addiction, and both politics and the new medium of television.  But they finally met their match in the late 60s when they took on the counterculture, hippies, and free love.

Cabin in the Woods.  It’s clever, self-reflexive, even meta.  What it isn’t, is very scary or entertaining.

Tim League.  The CEO and founder of the Alamo Drafthouse talks about movie theater etiquette, watching films in a coffin, and how his father scarred him for life by taking him to see Jaws when he was only seven.

The Three Stooges.  “Nuk!  Nuk!  Nuk!”  ‘Nuff said.

The Raven.  “Nevermore.”  As far as this film is concerned, truer words were never spoken, by man or fowl.

Carnage.  Apparently Roman Polanski never heard the old adage, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”

21 Jump Street.  At one point in the story, Ice Cube advises, “Embrace the cliche!”  The filmmakers do exactly that and then turn it on its head.

50/50.  A pretty good movie, that, oddly enough, is almost immediately forgettable.

Wrath of the Titans.  Sam Worthington again plays Perseus, a character who is half god, half human, and this time around, he isn’t half bad.

Beginners. Combined with The Beaver and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Beginners completes last year’s terrifying Trilogy of Quirk.

Wanderlust. There’s not a lot of wandering going on here–unless the title refers to what your mind does during the film.

Submarine.  Another indie film torpedoed by too much quirk?  Or does it get the mix of oddball characters and idiosyncratic storytelling just right?

The Hunger Games. Like Twilight, Lionsgate’s next big movie franchise is based on a successful series of young adult novels.  Which makes you wonder, are there any books written these days for adults that are worth turning into movies?

The Vow.  It’s the year of the Tatum.  With 21 Jump Street already a big hit, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Magic Mike still to come, how do the Misfits feel about this initial effort from Mr. Tatum?

Bruce Broughton.  The Emmy winning and Oscar nominated composer talks about scoring Young Sherlock Holmes, writing music for comedies, and working with Peter Yates, Alan Alda, John Hughes, and Michael Jackson.

John Carter.  Has Disney succeeded in bringing Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Martian Fantasy to the screen, or have they simply turned it into Dancing with Barsoomians?

The Big Year.  This film was in and out of theaters so fast it was harder to spot than a Blue Footed Boobie.  But for those who did manage to see it, they experienced that rarest of sightings… a really good movie.

Safe House.  Exactly who is the safe house safe for?

The Woman in Black.  According to this film, if looks could kill, a bunch of kids would be dead.  Huh?

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Flagrant Oscar Bait?  Or quirk run amok?

We Bought a Zoo. It’s Elizabethtown with animals, which means it’s well-meaning, a little too nice, and has a sentimental screenplay propped up by a handful of clever story moments.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The only mole in this movie is the entertainment–and it’s deep, deep undercover. 

War Horse. Although it’s been called an old fashion epic that tugs at the heartstrings, some of the Misfits weren’t all that enamored with this latest Spielberg effort.  Are they looking a gift horse in the mouth?

The Artist. The less said the better–really.

The Adventures of Tintin.  Andy Serkis not only brought Gollum to life on the movie screen, but also King Kong and Caesar the super-intelligent ape.  What seems to be beyond Mr. Serkis and an army of CGI technicians is a believable human being.

Contraband.  Forget about drugs and counterfeit money.  Can we start smuggling good screenplays into the country?

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  As Da Man points out, a better title might be The Man Who Hired the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Mission Impossible:  Ghost Protocol.  Your mission, if you should decide to accept it, is to… well,  have a good time at this movie.

The Academy Award Nominations.  ‘Nuff said.  But don’t worry, everyone is just going to keep right on talking about them–even the Misfits.

Sherlock Holmes:  A Game of Shadows. It’s the thinking man’s movie that goes BOOM!

New Year’s Eve. Here’s a New Year’s resolution everyone can get behind:  No more Garry Marshall romantic comedies.

The Golden Globe Awards.  The show was a lot like the gold sprinkled desert that was served.  Sparkly and tasty on the night of the show but not so much the following morning.

My Week with Marilyn.  Forget about one week, judging by this movie, two hours would be too long.

Puss in Boots.  This prequel to Shrek definitely lays an egg–but is it a golden egg or a goose egg?

J. Edgar.  Armed with his latest Oscar bait, Eastwood goes fishing for Academy Awards.  But will this turn out to be “the one that got away”?

Hugo.  You go, I go, we all go for Hugo–that is, if you’re a Misfit.

Immortals.  A grim, ugly version of  Greek mythology that’s filled with castrations, disfigured women, and Mickey Rourke sucking on chicken bones.  Who’d want to live forever in this world?

Tower Heist.  A bunch of likable guys in a pretty unlikely caper.

The Three Musketeers.  It’s got a sort of Jules Verne, steampunk vibe.  What it hasn’t got, is much to do with the Alexandre Dumas novel.

The Descendants.  Combine skilled acting, excellent direction, an impressive screenplay, plus gorgeous cinematography and what do you get?  The Misfits have an answer for you.

The Thing.  Some things are better left in Antarctica buried in the ice.

In Time.  After wasting two hours watching this film, The Time Bandits might seem like a better title.

Real Steel.  The robot action is great!  Unfortunately,  the human action is pretty mechanical and unconvincing.

The Ward. If the characters in The Ward took the DSM III test, instead of turning out to be crazy and paranoid, they’d just turn out to be dull and boring.

Footloose.  Forget about the ban on dancing.  Apparently Hollywood has a ban on new ideas.

The Ides of March.  Shhhh.  Whatever you do, don’t tell Clooney about Willow Creek dam.  The shock might be too much for him.

Abduction.  This idiotic movie has one believable premise.  After spending two hours with Taylor Lautner, you’ll definitely believe someone would put him up for adoption–even as a teenager.

Troll Hunter.  “Trolls!!!”  Nuff said.

Our Idiot Brother.   A likable film about an idiot character, or an idiot film about a likable character?

Moneyball.  There was a time when baseball movies were about legends like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Jackie Robinson.  But not anymore.  Now they’re about zeros–literally.  This is a sports film about statistics and crunching numbers.

Drive.  The year of the Gosling continues, but it’s a creepy Albert Brooks who almost steals the picture.

Conan the Barbarian.  Keep the first twenty minutes, call it Young Conan, and you’ve got a great short.  Add an hour and a half of confused story and bad acting, and you’ve got the new Conan the Barbarian movie.

Fred Koenekamp.  He’s faced the challenge of putting epic-size films on the screen like Patton and Papillon, and he’s been in the thick of the action on a roller rink in Kansas City Bomber, but maybe the greatest challenge he faced was a bunch of bees in The Swarm.  Part 2 of Jim’s interview with cinematographer Fred Koenekamp.

The Debt. No, it’s not a movie about your student loan.  Instead, this espionage thriller tells the story of three Mossad agents as they attempt to apprehend a Nazi war criminal.  No word on whether their student loans were ever paid.

Attack the Block. What do you get when you combine great direction, smart screenwriting, terrific acting, and a budget that’s probably a bit larger than the craft service bill for Super 8? A surprisingly good film, that’s what.  Remember, if you see only one kids v.s aliens movie this year, make sure it’s Attack the Block.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.  Maybe it’s only natural that this franchise, which is getting a little long in the tooth, goes looking for the Fountain of Youth.

X-Men: First Class.  The Next step in the evolution of the X-Men film series or a genetic throw-back?

Transformers: Dark of the Moon.  Watch as your hard-earned cash is transformed into box office gold.  Otherwise, everything else about this movie remains pretty much the same as the first two films.

Larry Crowne.  In his new film, Tom Hanks goes to college and learns about economics, public speaking, and love.  But judging by Larry Crowne, maybe he should have taken a couple of film courses also.

Green Lantern.  With the release of Green Hornet and Green Lantern, the studios should declare a moratorium on making movies about superheroes with the word “Green” in their name.  This means you, Green Arrow.

This week’s guest on The Islander is author Jim Morton.  He was a contributing editor to Incredibly Strange Films and in the early 80s put out the fanzine Trashola.  He has forgotten more about horror and sex-ploitation films than most people will ever know, and his picks definitely reflect his eclectic tastes.

Midnight in Paris.  Paris might be a “movable feast,” but Midnight in Paris is more like a buffet stuck in the 20s.

Kung Fu Panda 2.  In the 80s, a film was released with the tagline, “The movie that kicks you in the face!”  Panda 2 is more like a kick in the gut–or maybe just a bit lower.

Bridesmaids.  “Always a bridesmaid, never a bride.”  As far as comedy goes, this might not be such a bad thing.

The Tree of Life.  Silly and pretentious?  Or a daring, surprising film?  Or maybe, a little bit of both?

The Beaver. Warning!  Explicit language!  Who’s loonier?  Mel with a beaver puppet on his hand, or Jim as he descends into sputtering incoherency in an attempt to review The Beaver?

Source Code.  Last summer in Prince of Persia, Jake Gyllenhaal could travel a few minutes back in time.  In Source Code, he’s upped it to eight minutes.  Hopefully next year, he’ll star in a remake of The Time Tunnel and manage to travel way, way back in time…and never come back.

Atlas Shrugged–and the audience shrugged right back.

Arthur.  How bad is this remake?   Even Helen Mirren isn’t all that good in it.  Now that’s pretty bad.

Paul.  Movie-wise, just another misidentified UFO?  Maybe, but watching a weather balloon or looking at swamp gas for an hour and a half would be more entertaining and fun.

Sucker Punch.  As ridiculous as Jack Snyder’s Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole was, it still made more sense than Sucker Punch.

The Lincoln Lawyer.  A film so silly, the audience might consider trying to plea bargain for a shorter running time.

Battle: LA.  In the war between the aliens and the marines, there’s really only one loser: the audience.

Rango.  Strangers don’t last long in the town of Dirt.  This is bad news for Rango, since it’s hard to get any stranger than a domesticated chameleon voiced by Johnny Depp, starring in a western featuring a bunch of desert creatures.

International Tom Hanks Day.

The Fighter.  Both Christian Bale and Melissa Leo won Oscars for their supporting roles. Although it isn’t exactly clear who they’re supporting, it doesn’t seem to be Mark Wahlberg.

Winter’s Bone.  Hillbilly noir or one of last year’s better films?

The Kid’s Are All Right.  Who are these people?  Is this just your standard issue Hollywood love triangle tricked out in lesbian drag to make it seem “new and edgy,” or is it actually some kind of science fiction film that takes place in an alternate universe populated by annoying, self-centered people who actually say things like “all right” and “groovy”?

127 Hours.  Immovable object meets very resistible force.  Sometimes a dull penknife is the only answer to life’s problems.

The Green Hornet.  Are the Green Hornet and Kato villains or heroes?  Or maybe both.  Or maybe neither.  Then again, maybe they’re just a couple of annoying slackers.

The Dilemma. Two friends create a device that makes a silent electric vehicle roar like a rumbling muscle car.  The Dilemma is a lot like that device.  Look under the hood of this comedy, and you won’t find any laughs, just a lame drama pretending to be something it isn’t.

The Rite.  “The power of house payments compels you!  The power of house payments compels you!”  Maybe this explains why Anthony Hopkins is in The Rite.

The Misfits remember film composer John Barry.

The Company Men.  How can a film starring Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, and Kevin Costner go wrong?  The answer?  Ben Affleck.

Tron: Legacy.  In this case, the legacy isn’t special effects so much, as it is lame, lazy story-telling.

How do You know.  A film so close to being a non-experience, that these questions almost always come up: “How do you know it’s started?  How do you know it’s playing?  How do you know it’s over?”

Season of the Witch.  Welcome to the middle ages–for movies that is.  It’s that dark time between the holiday blockbusters and the Academy Awards.  It’ll take more than a couple of knights with good intentions to save a movie released during this period.

Cinescopes.  Forget about what the stars have to say–what do our favorite films reveal about us?

Yogi Bear.  CGI bears, based on Hanna Barbera characters, in a 3D movie.  Is this the Misfits’ worst nightmare come true–or a surprisingly watchable comedy?

Whether you like the new True Grit or not might depend on whom you prefer: The Duke or The Dude.

The Golden Globe Awards.  Hollywood’s elite go panning for validation and creative recognition in the rather shallow stream of the HFPA, but as usual, only turn up fool’s gold.

The King’s Speech.  Not surprisingly, this is one film the Misfits can’t stop talking about.

The Warrior’s Way.  It’s a film that’s all green screen and special effects.  The only thing that hasn’t been digitally added is a decent screenplay.

Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.  Is the third time a charm?

The Black Swan.  If you look closely during the scene where the portraits taunt and laugh at the main character, you might see the Misfits.

The Tourist.  Depp.  Jolie.  Venice.  How could it go wrong?  For the answer, you can either spend two hours watching the movie, or twelve minutes listening to the Misfit’s review.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.  One thing’s for sure, as far as good movies go, we’re definitely in a bear market.

Resident Evil: Afterlife.  Maybe this should have been titled Resident Evil: Afterthought–as in, “Oh yeah, besides sexy, gun-toting babes, maybe we should have had a good story.  Oh well, maybe next time.”

Oscar predictions.  Without benefit of animal entrails or tarot cards, the Misfits do their best to predict the 10 Best Picture nominations.

Salt.  An alternate title might be The Russians Moles Are Coming, The Russian Moles Are Coming, since just about everyone in the film turns out to be a Russian mole except the President.  And even he’s a little iffy.

Inception.  One of the few good films of the summer.  You might want to spin a top after seeing it to make sure you’re not dreaming.

Solarbabies/Prayer of the Rollerboys.  Two films look boldly into the future and see a world that looks a lot like…the 80s?

Predators.  If the predators really wanted to track down the most intelligent and illusive prey, they might try hunting for a new idea to make into a movie.

The MGM Dogville shorts.  Before Marmaduke, before Babe, even before Francis the talking mule, there were the Dogville shorts.

Jonah Hex.  It’s said that Jonah can speak to the dead.  Then maybe he should have himself a little talk with this movie and find out what went wrong.  Because one thing’s for sure–it died a horrible death at the box office.

Knight and Day.  Is the bar so low for what’s considered entertaining that this mildly competent film can pass as one of the summer’s successes?  While not a Jonah Hex level disaster, it certainly didn’t do the business that was expected of it.  Still, the Misfits find themselves split as to its merits.

Marmaduke.  He’s making the big move to Cali and livin’ large in the OC.  Of course, Marmaduke lives large wherever he is–except maybe at the box office.

The A-Team.  They specialize in the ridiculous.  Ridiculous story.  Ridiculous characters.  Ridiculous action.

The remake of The Karate Kid has lots of attitude, lots of great scenery, and lots of Kung Fu.  It’s even got lots of minutes (two hundred and thirty of ‘em), but what it hasn’t got enough of is Jackie Chan.

The Misfits take a look at the movies opening in the last two months of the summer.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.  We’re not even half way through the summer and already a second film about time travel is playing in theaters.  The unavoidable question that has to be asked is, “If you could travel back in time and only avoid seeing one time travel film, which one would it be?”  And no fair picking Marmaduke.  Just because time seems to stand still, doesn’t make it a time travel movie.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.  Thriller?  Mystery?  Feminist wish fulfillment flick?  Character study?  Or just a freak fest?  The Misfits have a tough time pinning this one down.

Survival of the Dead.  You’ll moan, you’ll groan, and after two hours, you might stagger from the theater like a slack-jawed, brain dead zombie.  Even though the dead survive in this latest George A. Romero film, Survival of the Dead might be the shot to the brainpan that ends this cycle of living dead films.

Harry Brown.  What I want to know is, where’s the Harry Brown action figure?  It could come with play money to drop everywhere in a drunken stupor, an asthma inhaler, and a cell phone that you can hear his old codger buddy being killed on.  Depressing drug den and graffiti covered, urine stained pedestrian underpass sold separately.

It’s back to school for show and tell as the Misfits share some of the things they learned at the movies.

Robin Hood.  Although there’s no robbing the rich and giving to the poor in this new version, when it’s over, your wallet will definitely be ten dollars or so lighter and you might very well feel like you’ve been robbed.

Defendor.  He can’t spell, he can’t fight, and he pays a prostitute 40 dollars a day to be his friend.  A new hero for a new time?  Or just a direct to DVD mess?

Iron Man 2.  This sequel has more of everything: story lines, villains, and not just one Iron Man but two!  So how come it feels like something is missing?

Kick Ass.  It’s reprehensible, offensive, and objectionable.  But it’s also smart, challenging, and a well-made film.  And it’s got Hit Girl in it, which is a plus or a minus, depending on how you feel about the film.

The E*Trade Babies movie.  Product placement takes a giant leap forward as the product actually becomes the movie.  But why stop with the E*Trade babies?  What about the Burger King?  Or the Maytag Repair Man?  Funny, you should ask…

Frankenstein Meets the Spacemonster.  A lost episode of Steve Allen’s Meeting of Minds?  Allen: What’s your take on the current economic situation, Mr. Frankenstein?  Frankenstein: ….  Allen: And your point of view on this, Spacemonster?  Spacemonster: GRRRRRRRRRRRRR! (rips off Allen’s head)  Or is it a low budget, sci-fi film packed with stock footage and babes in bikinis?  Maybe, it’s just an early, blatant example of product placement, shilling for vespas.

The Misfits take a final look back at the January and February movies.  How did the big ego/small expectation, almost direct-to-video, and test screening flops do?

Shutter Island.  An updated Dr. Caligari, or just an over-blown, big budget excuse for a bunch of extras to do some gardening?

Cop Out.  It’s about two cops who spend most of the film not being cops.  It’s a comedy without any comedy.  And it’s a buddy picture without any buddies.  What does that leave?  Listen to the review and find out.

The worst of the best.  Jusct because a film receives the Best Picture Oscar, doesn’t mean it’s any good.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.  What’s the point of being an Olympian if your kid can call you on the carpet for being busy with God stuff instead of being a good parent?  The only thing that could possibly be lamer is taking an elevator to Olympus.

The new Wolfman movie is an uneasy mix of yesterday and today.  Is it an effort doomed to leave gorehounds disappointed and fans of the original film frustrated?

Hollywood takes on Red Box and bad Twitter movie reviews.

The Islander Part 2.  Nancy concludes her interview with the wonderful Ann Rutherford, who shares her final five picks to take with her on a desert island.  Ann also tells the story of how she got the part of Scarlett’s youngest sister in Gone With the Wind.

Ma and Pa Kettle reconsidered.  Although to be honest, we’re not sure these movies have ever been seriously considered.  If not, it’s about time they were, and The Cinema Misfits are up to the challenge.

The Islander.  Guests are interviewed by Nancy and asked to pick the 10 films they would take with them to a desert island.  Nancy’s first guest is Ann Rutherford.  Miss Rutherford played Scarlett’s youngest sister in Gone With the Wind and Polly Benedict in the Andy Hardy series, and is a  veteran of many wonderful Hollywood films.

2012 reviewed.  Spoiler alert!  But to be honest, this thing is pretty spoiler proof.  Things fall down and go CRASH!  Oops.  Did I say too much?

Hollywood.  Out of ideas, or moving in a direction so bold, so unexpected that we can only tag along and wonder at Tinseltown’s peculiar kind of genius?
